Full Review

We’ve tested other wallets from SlimFold, but none are as large as the Passport Wallet. Though it appears to have many of the same features we’re used to seeing from the company, we’re curious if the features from a tiny, front-pocket wallet translate to a larger one that works with a passport. Let’s dive in!

The Rundown

Like other SlimFold models, the wallet utilizes the brand’s soft shell material, described as a blend of GORE-TEX and Kevlar. It’s highly durable, lightweight, and comfortable to hold. It’s also water-resistant, so your passport, cash, and cards will stay dry. It offers RFID protection, which we tested using the iPhone’s NFC reader, and is handy for travelers worried about their card information getting skimmed.

SlimFold Passport Wallet Solo
SlimFold Passport Wallet | This thing has a small footprint.

Inside the wallet, there are four card slots. You can put two cards in each for a grand total of eight. Behind that, there’s a larger pocket where you can store documents, cash, or a passport.

Opposite the card slots is the primary passport storage area with a few additions. This pocket isn’t as deep, so you can slide the passport in and still open it reasonably well. If using it for identification, we recommend sliding the passport inside on the main page so you can show it more easily. You’ll have to take it out at the airport, though you can do so quickly.

Behind the passport storage area, there’s a place for an AirTag. Additionally, there’s a spot for a credit-card-sized tracker on the front side of the pocket. These are handy; they help you find your wallet if you’ve misplaced it. However, if someone steals it, they’ll likely find the trackers quickly because they’re easy to feel through the lightweight materials. If a thief finds them, they’ll likely dispose of them as soon as they do.

When not traveling, you can use the passport pocket as a spot for a notebook, which is handy. It comes with one, too, so you can take notes, write down a grocery list, or doodle while riding the bus or train to work. There’s a pen slot in the center, too, though it’s designed for small, minimalist pens. If you don’t already have one of those at home and want to utilize this feature, you’ll need to make an additional purchase. However, if you do add a pen, you can’t even tell it’s inside, which is surprising considering the wallet is already so low-profile.

The wallet closes using magnets. They’re at the top and bottom of the wallet, so they’ll still work when a passport is in the quick-show pocket. They’re tiny but snappy and hold the wallet closed quite well.

Though there’s no place to fit cash without folding it, you can stow it in either passport storage area or in the card slots with an extra fold.

SlimFold Passport Wallet Cash
SlimFold Passport Wallet | There’s a ton of room for gear storage.

One of the most unique things about this wallet is where it’s made. At the time of writing, it’s crafted in California, which isn’t common in the gear that we test. When reviewing travel backpacks, daypacks, and minimalist wallets, we often find that American companies outsource production. This isn’t the end of the world; however, it’s nice to see an American company utilize American workers when possible.

Packability

Even when packed out, this passport wallet is tiny. It measures 5.375 x 4.1 x 0.375 inches, which isn’t much larger than a standard passport. To date, it’s the smallest passport wallet we’ve come across, and it is still smaller than some passport covers, which don’t have as much functionality.

SlimFold Passport Wallet AirTag

Naked, the SlimFold Passport Wallet weighs just 2.6 ounces, or 73.7 grams, which is incredibly lightweight. Once loaded up, it’ll have a little more bulk, but it’s still straightforward to carry and will even fit in some front pockets, depending on the pants or shorts that you’re wearing. It feels cramped in smaller pockets, but we can’t complain much for a passport wallet.

SlimFold Passport Wallet Cards
SlimFold Passport Wallet | Card storage is easy.

The materials are very malleable, which allows this wallet to fit in various places. Some users will not like this because it feels less durable than other passport wallets, though we’ve had no issues with it surviving the bumps and knocks of travel.

Quick Comparison

Though they don’t look similar when examined, the Pioneer Passport Wallet has a similar design. This model takes up vastly more room and is made with more durable materials. Still, it’s much larger and thicker and won’t fit in many front pockets, whereas the SlimFold Passport Wallet squeezes in without much issue and is much more comfortable because it has more flex to it.

SlimFold Passport Wallet Comparison
SlimFold Passport Wallet | Their footprints are similar, but the Pioneer is bulkier.

You can fit more cash and cards inside the Pioneer, too, but not as many as you might think, considering how much larger it is than the SlimFold. It doesn’t have a dedicated tracker pocket, either, and the SlimFold has two. You can fit one into the various pockets, which eats into your card space.

If you’re looking for a wallet that can handle extreme travel situations where your wallet might get chewed up otherwise, the Pioneer Passport Wallet might be your choice. On the other hand, if you’re looking for something minimalistic you can use as a regular wallet when you aren’t traveling, the SlimFold Passport Wallet is calling your name!
