In recent months, we’ve become more impressed with gear from tomtoc. When we got a hold of the tomtoc Voyage T-29 Accessory Pouch, we were curious if it would live up to the higher standard that we’ve become accustomed to when looking at tomtoc gear or if it would fall short. Let’s dive in!
External Components
The selling point of the materials is the 420D CORDURA® nylon. It’s durable, water resistant, and looks sleek. There’s polyester in the mix, too, but we aren’t sure where it plays into the construction of this pouch. That said, it feels durable throughout, so we can’t be too mad that the entire thing isn’t CORDURA®.
The zippers are some of the best in the business, YKK. The pulls feel basic, but there isn’t much to scoff at here. They work well and don’t get in your way, which we think is the point of a zipper.
CORDURA® materials and YKK zippers are great on paper, but how does everything come together?
First, it’s worth mentioning that this pouch only comes in black. We dig it, but we’re Pack Hacker. What did you expect? If you want something vibrant, look elsewhere! Black goes with everything, though, so keep an open mind, and we will, too!
The pouch’s front face has a few textures, which we dig. We think it adds depth and style, and that’s worth commending. A tomtoc logo on the right side is sleek, simple, and crafted from metal, which is rad.
Loops on the left and right sides are handy for attaching the pouch to things or sticking your fingers through to grab or carry it. They stay out of your way when you aren’t using them, which we find handy.
There’s a larger handle on the top, where the real party is. It has enough padding to be comfortable but doesn’t go overboard, so you’re comfortable carrying it to the coffee shop without taking up too much space in your daypack or travel backpack.
Last but certainly not least, the T-29 Accessory Pouch stands up independently, which is handy for numerous situations. Whether sitting at the coffee shop or on the airplane, you can be confident that you’ll have quick access to your gear while the pouch sits on the counter or tray table as you get to work.
Inside The Pouch
There’s a secondary compartment on the back side of the pouch with a zippered closure for security. The materials inside are incredibly soft, perfect for stowing your phone. The cushioned sides will ensure that it’s scratch-free. Plus, there’s enough padding to keep it shatter-free, too.
We’ve got another secondary compartment on the front of the pouch. This one is zippered, too, but on the smaller side. Inside is a key leash with a metal clip, which we dig. They’re often plastic, and we sometimes fear they’ll break. It doesn’t happen often, but the metal one offers peace of mind for those terrified of losing their keys. There’s no other organization here, but the key clip is nice. You can stow smaller headphones here, a wallet, or similarly sized items.
The main compartment has much more room to work with, and we’re here for it. However, accessing that space can feel awkward. The zipper feels like it should go down further on either side to make access easier. Getting gear inside and out sometimes feels like a struggle because of the tight opening. Maybe this is nitpicky, but it’s worth noting.
On the back wall, there are two mesh pockets that we find a solid place to stow charging cables, a mouse, or a similarly-sized item. The mesh is stretchy and robust, which makes it ideal for hanging on to gear.
On the front side, there’s a zippered pocket. It isn’t huge, but you can stow larger items here that you don’t want to get lost in the main compartment. Plus, there’s a hidden AirTag or tracker pocket here. It’s crafted from mesh and hidden behind the zipper, so a potential thief might not find it, giving you a better chance of finding your stuff.
The rest of the space is fair game, and there’s a lot of it. It can be challenging to use it all effectively, as the pouch is pretty tall, but maximizing the space is pretty easy once you get used to the size. You may have to stack items, but for the size of this pouch, you can stow a lot of gear inside.
It feels as if it’s stuck between wanting to be a tech pouch and a standard one. There isn’t much organization to be overtly helpful, but there isn’t enough space to stow a ton of gear inside. There are definitely uses for it; however, for those reasons, it might not find its way into every person’s pack-out while they’re traveling.
