A luggage set is the perfect way to get all the rolling bags you could ever need and save money in the process. Because you’re buying two or three bags, you’ll often get hefty price cuts, making buying them as a set worthwhile instead of purchasing them separately. A can of pop (or soda for you non-Midwesterners) will likely run you a dollar; however, if you buy a case of 12, you’ll likely get it for 40 or 50 cents. It’s the same kind of deal, but without the carbonation!
When choosing the best luggage set for you, there are a few things to consider. Luggage sets come in various shapes and sizes, so you should consider what you need before purchasing. First, what kind of luggage have you used in the past? Did the sizing work for you? If so, ensure those sizes are included in the set you’re purchasing.
Similarly, if you love soft-sided luggage, don’t get a set of hard-sided bags. Go with what you’re comfortable with already. There’s no sense trying something new when purchasing a set; go with what works. We also recommend choosinga more toned-down colorway when purchasing a luggage set. After all, you’ll have three of them, so maybe hot pink isn’t the answer for everyone
Why You Should Trust Us
We’ve been testing travel gear professionally since 2017, and our testing team has decades of combined experience using rolling luggage for work and play. In addition to being at the forefront of new travel gear technology, we’re out here testing this stuff every day, so you don’t have to. Seriously, the gear our reviewers test at Pack Hacker is a part of our everyday lives.
How We Tested It
For this post, we wanted to ensure that all the bags fit inside one another. Though this isn’t helpful for travel, it’s essential for home storage while not using the bags. Having three pieces of rolling luggage is excellent; however, since luggage sets often include at least one oversized checked bag, storing it all separately is a bummer!
Let’s roll into these luggage sets!
The Samsonite Voltage DLX 2 Piece Set comes with two bags, a checked and a carry on, and they fit into one another without too much fuss, which is handy for storage when you’re not traveling. Who wants to think about that, though? There are two packages, both including a carry on. You can go with the medium or large checked bag depending on your needs.
We dig this set because the cases have a unique exterior. It’s just as durable as other rolling luggage that we’ve tested; however, the textured front and back sides make it easier for you to identify your bags at the luggage carousel than if you had something more standard.
The organization is pretty basic inside the bag, which makes things easy to pack up when it’s time to head out. Additionally, the handles are wide enough for those with big hands and comfortable to use all day if you’ve got a few hours between hotel check-out and your flight and need to lug both bags around.
Why We Like It- The unique exterior is easy to find at baggage claim
- The telescopic handle is comfortable, even for long trips
- The wheels aren’t the best on uneven surfaces
- There’s no organizer specifically for dress clothing
The CALPAK Ambeur 3-Piece Luggage Set comes with three cases: the carry-on, a medium case, and a large checked bag. Best of all, all three fit into one another for easy storage.
It comes in unique colorways, which we dig, as many carry on bags come in the same colors. There are shiny, vibrant, and earthy options. This doesn’t affect usage, but it allows you to find something that fits your vibe and is easy to find in the luggage carousel.
The bags are expandable, adding up to two inches of space when deployed. This works well for trips you plan on bringing extra things home, like food and souvenirs, or trips where you’re heavy on the way there with presents for loved ones.
The wheels on all three cases work well and are smooth, so you can confidently glide through the airport. We find the largest bag a bit harder to handle than the smaller sizes. That said, we haven’t tested a case that large that isn’t at least a little unwieldy, so we’re not knocking it too much.
Why We Like It- The bags are expandable so that you can fit more gear inside
- The wheels are very smooth in use
- The largest bag is a bit hard to handle due to its size
- The colorways aren’t for everyone, though you can always go with black
Away Luggage Sets are unique. Yes, you can go with the Away Set of 3 Classic, which we recommend due to the sleek design, included laundry bag, and smooth wheels. However, you have options.
The way Away structures their luggage sets is good for travelers. Unlike other brand sets that limit you to only choosing certain bags, Away allows you to choose any two suitcases and get a discount. Choose three, and you’ll get an even bigger one. Since you’re not limited in your choices, you can pick the best combination for you.. If you love the Carry On, you could get three in different colorways and still get the discount. While we don’t think that’s practical, you do you! Whether you go with the Away Set of 3 Classic or another combination of bags, they all match because Away’s bags have a similar style.
Why We Like It- You can mix and match any of Away’s luggage and still get a discount
- The cases come with an included laundry bag
- The discount might not be as steep as other luggage sets
- The larger sizes feel a bit awkward in use
The Carl Friedrik The Core Luggage Set is a two-bag set that fits into one another easily. This is handy for storage or surprising airport security when your bag inside a bag filled with chocolates is flagged for inspection.
The bags are very different sizes, with the Carry On coming in at 40 liters and the Large Check-In boasting a massive 90.9 liters. These may seem too far apart to make sense; however, we feel that most travelers only need a carry on or a checked bag and not much in between. Plus, you can add a travel backpack to your carry on luggage to make up some extra space if push comes to shove.
This luggage set is quite expensive for just two cases; however, when compared to the price of purchasing each separately, you’re saving a chunk of change. Plus, it’s made with premium materials. The cases are crafted from German-engineered Makrolon, which is durable and not too heavy, and the Hinomoto wheels are some of the quietest on the market. The bags are stylish, too, and match most occasions with ease.
Why We Like It- The Makrolon is highly durable and not too heavy
- There are just two cases, which is all most travelers need
- It’s still pricey for just two suitcases, though you do save a significant chunk of change by buying them as a set
- While the exterior is durable, it marks up fairly easily
The July Classic Family Set has three cases: July’s Carry On, Checked, and Checked Plus. Though they fit into one another, this process was a little more challenging than most other bags on this list. They still fit and save space in your closet that way!
There are plenty of colorways available, and you’ll get the same features as other cases you’re used to from July, like smooth wheels, easy-to-operate YKK zippers, and a compression system to save space inside the case. July has some of the best telescopic handles in the game, with more height options than any other bags we’ve tested, so everyone can find a height that works for them.
We use the Carry-on (42L) most often; however, the larger sizes (80L and 110L) are perfect for extended trips or family vacations when you only want to bring one checked bag.
Why We Like It- The telescopic handles have 20 heights to work with, so they’re comfortable for most travelers
- The bags utilize YKK zippers, which are some of the best in the business
- They can be difficult to fit inside each other
- The compression panel takes some getting used to, even if it is effective
The Travelpro Maxlite® 5 Floating On Air Luggage Set is one of our first soft-sided luggage picks. It came with three bags that fit into one another. As the bags are soft-sided, it’s easier to get them to fit into one another; however, they aren’t as satisfying to stow inside one another because they don’t slide in like hard-sided luggage does.
The price is incredibly fair for three cases, which is what we expect from Travelpro considering the competitive pricing on their bags. The wheels are fantastic and durable, too, which is excellent for people who are rough on their gear or worried about a blowout while on vacation. This is one of the many reasons Travelpro is the standard for flight attendants and other airline workers, as the bags are functional, durable, and won’t break the bank.
Why We Like It- They’re soft-sided and expandable, so you can fit a little extra gear inside when push comes to shove
- The wheels are phenomenally smooth and durable
- We’ve noticed a few loose threads in testing, though nothing detrimental
- The bags aren’t as sleek as hard-sided rolling luggage
From the image, it’s pretty simple to see how the two-piece Beis The Essentials Set fits inside itself. Where this luggage set stands out is in the combinations of what you can get
The Essentials Set allows you to choose any roller, Weekender, and dopp kit with a 15% discount on the total. This means you can get the size weekender, style of carry on, and the regular dopp kit that works best for you in one package at a discount. The weekenders are shoulder/crossbody bags that work well for use at the local market or on the airplane, the dopp kits are stylish and match the luggage, and the carry on meets our expectations for what rolling luggage should be, from the internal organization to the telescopic handle and wheels. And, since they’re sold individually, you can choose any of the colors you want.
While all the options are great, we recommend looking at the dimensions before purchasing. For example, the Weekender is wider than the Small Carry-On Roller, so it sits a little awkwardly on top while you roll it through the airport. Additionally, the Dopp Kit takes up roughly half the space in the Small Carry-On, so we recommend storing that in the Weekender. Also, make sure you have a lot of toiletries to bring or it could end up as wasted space.
All that said, if you don’t need three large pieces of luggage but are looking for a set that matches and will work for your next trip abroad, look no further than a Beis The Essentials Set.
Why We Like It- You can choose which carry on, weekender, and dopp kit you want
- All of the bags match each other well, ensuring continuity
- There’s no option to get two pieces of rolling luggage
- Though there’s a discount, the dopp kit prices are higher than some of our favorites, and it may be too large for some users
So, there you have it! Hopefully, you’ve got a few luggage sets you’re interested in and can decide which one is best for you. Happy traveling!
