What makes the Stretch Zion stand out, initially, is its combination of technical features and everyday practicality. The pants feel modern and casual enough for city wear but are still built to handle friction, long hikes, and multi-day travel. They are designed to be durable, sustainable, and versatile, yet there are trade-offs, as with any multi-use pant. Over time, high-wear areas show signs of use, and certain design features favor aesthetics over pure functionality. The Rundown

The Stretch Zion Cargo Pant is constructed from a double-layered fabric made of 95% recycled nylon and 5% elastane. The two-way stretch provides freedom of movement without feeling loose or baggy, and the material is breathable enough for warm days while still offering UPF 50+ sun protection. prAna also uses bluesign®-approved fabric and a PFC-free DWR, so it’s a solid choice for eco-conscious travelers. Over a year of regular wear, the fabric has held up well structurally, though it does pill in high-friction areas like the groin, pocket edges, and near belt loops. Loose threads appear in detailing, but the main seams remain solid, and there’s no indication that the fabric is at risk of tearing or losing its shape.

Material performance is generally excellent, but these pants are not odor-resistant. In hot weather or during high-intensity activities, they can start to smell after a couple of wears. In more moderate conditions, we found we could get 5-7 wears before feeling the need to wash them, and hanging the pants between wears helps air them out, extending their usability. The cargo pockets on the thighs provide additional storage, but heavier items can pull them down and distort the pants’ shape, so they’re better suited for lightweight items like a wallet, card, or keys. The back patch pockets are less convenient, especially if you want to quickly slide in a phone, as they use hook-and-loop closures that slow access. Overall, pocket functionality prioritizes security over ease of use, making the pants ideal for travel and adventure rather than fast-paced day-to-day carry.

One area where these pants truly shine is packability. The fabric compresses easily, rolling down to roughly the size of leggings or slightly smaller than slacks. Our tester wears a U.S. size 6, and the pants fit comfortably across multiple wears and activities. Inseam options make them versatile for different heights: our tester, at 5’6,” wears the 31-inch inseam, which flows naturally over shoes. Her 5’8” sister wears the 33-inch inseam, while her 5’4” sister also wears the 31-inch inseam and prefers the slightly longer fit rather than a cropped look.
